In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teases the surprise appearance of a character from Archie mythos in the season finale. This character is said to have a darker origin and backstory, bringing with them the potential to add a new genre element to the show. Could this character be the iconic Sabrina the Teenage Witch? Before his grisly death that serves as the catalyst for the show’s story, Jason Blossom crossed Sweetwater River to Greendale – Sabrina Spellman’s hometown. Aguirre-Sacasa has also dropped hints about the famous teen witch in the past. He confirmed she will eventually be brought “into” or “alongside” the Riverdale universe. This also begs the question – will Sabrina get her own spin-off series?

The genre transformation theories don’t end there. Jason’s body was later found with a gunshot wound to the head… the staple method of killing zombies. Zombies in Riverdale? This would seem to be a reach of a theory if not for the fact that Aguirre-Sacasa is also the creator of the zombie spin-off comic book series Afterlife with Archie.

Aguirre-Sacasa admits to placing easter eggs in the show referring to the possibility of Afterlife. In the preliminary phases of creating Riverdale, pitching Afterlife as the storyline was passionately debated. However, they decided to go with a more grounded version that would lend them the ability to introduce a supernatural element later on should they decide to. In response to the possibility of Afterlife with Archie coming to Riverdale, Aguirre-Sacasa said simply: “There’s a chance that happens.”

So, here’s what we know:

• We will be introduced to a mysterious Archie comics character of old in the season finale
• Sabrina the Teenage Witch will be introduced in some way or other
• Afterlife with Archie is a possibility
• We should expect a new genre element in season 2
