Suicide Squad 2: ‘Run All Night’ Director Jaume-Collet Serra In The Running For Sequel

Although not very well received by critics and fans alike, Suicide Squad has achieved surprising box office success around the world. The David Ayer directed comic book blockbuster has made close to $750 million off of a $175 million dollar budget. No matter what critics say, numbers don’t lie and since those numbers look good on paper the “powers that be” have already greenlit a spinoff and a sequel.

David Ayer is set to direct the spinoff entitled Gotham City Sirens which is based on the comic series of the same name and will star Margot Robbie who will be reprising her role as Harley Quinn. Since Ayer is helming the female led spinoff, WB and the DCEU is looking to hire a new director for the Suicide Squad sequel as soon as possible. Directors like Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Child 44)  and Jonathan Levine (The Night Before, Warm Bodies) have been name dropped as front runners to direct. Mel Gibson, who most recently received an Oscar nomination for his film Hacksaw Ridge, seems to be at the top of Warner Bros. list of possible directors. However, a new name has entered the fold.

During a new episode of MTMP, reporter Jeff Sneider revealed that Jaume-Collet Serra is now in the running to direct the sequel as well. Serra is a Spanish director who has given us amazing films like Non-Stop and Run All Night, both of which starred Liam Neeson. Most recently, Serra directed the horror-thriller The Shallows starring Blake Lively. Serra has proven that he can tell an appealing story complete wih a gritty, yet stylish approach to action and suspense. These are qualities needed when you may have to helm a film that follows the exploits of villains turned anti-heroes.

There is currently no finished script or plot synopsis for the Suicide Squad sequel but it has been reported that Adam Cozard (Legend of Tarzan, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) has been tapped to write the script. What say you GOC fam? Do you think Serra is a good choice to direct the sequel? Is there a director that you think is better suited for the job? Let us know in the comments below.
