Venom Film Still in Development at Sony; Alex Kurtzman Reportedly Directing

Not too long ago, Sony finally wised up and came to terms with Marvel Studios, allowing them to include Spider-Man in the MCU (starting with Captain America: Civil War).

His next appearance within the MCU takes place in his solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Now, you would think that after this deal was such a success, Sony would cancel all of the other films they had lined up in their future Spider-Man film universe, including their solo Venom film. However, it seems as though they’re still moving forward with the film.

According to a tweet from Exhibitor Relations, Sony has given the solo venom film a release date of October 5th. If that date sounds a bit familiar, it’s because Aquaman was set to come out on that day. However, Warner Bros. recently just moved the film’s release to December. Even more interesting than all of that though: the film apparently already has a director as well.

Once again, Exhibitor Relations provides us with the news that Alex Kurtzman will be helming the film. His name may sound familiar to some, because he was the writer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and he also directed The Mummy Reboot. Check out both tweets below:

Now, keep in mind this is not yet confirmed by Sony, so don’t get nervous or excited. It would seem strange for them to just move forward with Venom out of the blue without Spider-Man being a bit more established in the MCU. On the other hand, they could just be doing a standalone Venom film, which would be kind of..useless.

Regardless, we’ll have to wait for more details. If this turns out to be true, would you guys want to see Tom Holland’s Spidey take on Venom, or do you think Sony should just hold off on the character all together? Let us know in the comment section below.

Venom (Official title TBA) is scheduled to release on October 5th, 2018.
