Emmy-winning actor Bill Paxton has died at the age of 61. A statement released by a family representative cites complications from surgery as the cause of death.

The full statement reads:

“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery,” a family representative said in a statement. “A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.”

The Texas native began acting in the 1970’s and went on to earn high praise for his role in the TV-mini series Hatfield and McCoys.

A well-respected and versatile actor, Paxton charmed audiences with memorable performances in films like Terminator, Aliens, True Lies, Apollo 13, and Titanic. His performance in Titanic sparked a multi-project partnership with director James Cameron. In more recent years, the actor was seen on HBO’s Big Love and ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

When news of Paxton’s death broke, several celebrities – including Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and James Woods – took to Twitter to offer their memories and condolences:

Paxton is survived by his two children, James and Lydia Paxton, as well as his wife of 30 years, Louise Newbury. May He Rest In Peace.
