British actress, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is making her way to the top. Back in January it was announced that Mbatha-Raw will be the lead in Julia Hart’s Fast Color. Hart will direct the film from the screenplay she co-wrote with producer Jordan Horowitz (La La Land). This is her second feature after her debut film and festival darling Miss Stevens.
According to Variety:
“Mbatha-Raw will portray a woman forced to go on the run when her superhuman abilities are discovered. Years after having abandoned her family, the only place she has left to hide is home.”
This is an exciting development for superhero movies, because this could be one of the very few superhero movies with a woman of colour as the lead. The premise does sound like an X-Men story, which might not be a bad thing. In fact, it might give the film the boost it needs to reach a wider audience.
Mbatha-Raw will be in next months Beauty and The Beast as Plumette the Feather Duster. She is also currently working with Ava DuVernay on Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time. Fast Color will be Mbatha-Raw’s fourth feature film with her as the lead. She had two fantastic leading roles in 2014 with Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Beyond The Lights, and Amma Asante’s Belle. She has not had many leading roles since, mostly supporting roles in Jupiter Ascending, Concussion, Free State Of Jones, and last years Miss Sloane. She is set to be one of the leads in producer J.J Abrams’ 2017 Cloverfield Movie. The extent of her role is still unclear, which is not unusual for an Abrams film. She is also set to reunite with Prince-Bythewood for An Untamed State.
Fast Color is an exciting entry to Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s blossoming career. She is an incredibly talented actress and this will surely solidify her leading lady status in Hollywood.
