Celebrations of Love: 4 of the Coolest Relationships in Comics & Sci-Fi

In honor of Valentine’s Day 2017, I thought it would be only write to provide a list of four of my favorite couples/ships within the sci-fi, fantasy, comic genres.

I want to start by saying that love, in any and all forms, is beautiful. It is heartwarming and soul-shaking. It makes things brighter and a bit more bearable. Love is a choice and love is a gift. Love is supportive, uplifting, courageous, and entirely encompassing.

I chose the following ships/couples because I believe they represent what it means to love and be in love. So, in no particular order:

1) Richonne–The Walking Dead

From her first introduction to us at the very end of season 2, we knew that Michonne was a force to be reckoned with. Since that introduction, she has continued to prove herself a fiercely protective woman, particularly when it comes to the people she cares about. We watched as she became somewhat of a mother figure to Carl and Judith, a friend to Carol, Maggie, Sasha, and the late Andrea, and now the better half to Walking Dead protagonist Rick Grimes. These two always seem so incredibly in tune with one another in a way that inspires fascination. Both are always prepared to do whatever it takes not only for their loved ones but simply to survive by living rather than existing.

2)Westallen–The Flash

The relationship between Iris West and Barry Allen is one of my favorites. These two were raised together and were and continue to be best friends. The romantic relationship seems to just be a great bonus for them. Another great thing about their relationship  is that, despite Barry being a superhero, Iris is no damsel in distress. She proves time and time again that she is more than capable of taking care of herself when the time comes. Also, Barry and Iris’ romantic relationship developed naturally, which doesn’t always happen onscreen. Barry was in love with Iris, but respected her previous relationships rather than force his feelings upon her at every turn. Their relationship feels real and extraordinarily genuine.

3)Poe Dameron/Finn–Star Wars: The Force Awakens

These two aren’t official yet, but if their interactions and chemistry in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is any indication, they’re headed there. From we’ve seen in TFA, specifically in the scene of Poe and Finn’s escape from the First Order, play off each other’s strengths. This is most obvious in the scene where they’re both shooting from the TIE fighter. Poe also gives Finn his name, derived from the number FN-2187 assigned to him as a Stormtrooper. This is a really cool moment because we see that Finn is humanized in a way he probably hasn’t been before in his capacity  working for the First Order. When the ship crashes on Jakku, Poe is somehow lost, but Finn manages to snag his jacket before the ship disappears. When these two are reunited, there is an amazing, perfect hug that convinced me at that these two are endgame. Poe notices Finn wearing his jacket and tells him, “Keep it. It looks good on you.” (internal screaming)

4)Black Panther & Storm–Marvel Comics

These two are honestly the definition of a power couple. They don’t need each other. That is what makes their relationship so amazing. Storm, who can literally control the freaking weather, is a badass all on her own. Black Panther (T’Challa) is king of the most amazing, coolest, most technologically advanced country in the world: Wakanda, along with being a badass superhero who protects his people and his homeland. Watching these two is like watching a lighter hit gasoline: gorgeous and explosive. Storm, hailing from Kenya, and T’Challa, hailing from Wakanda, have a relationship that is one of the most beautiful displays of Black Love. They support each other. The recognize the power of one another. They don’t get in each other’s way. Hopefully, Marvel can somehow finesse the rights to X-Men from Fox so we can actually see this play out on the big screen. It’s kind of necessary when you consider that these two are actually married.

Honorable Mention: Dorian and Chloe

Their love is unmeasurable. People strive to be as good as them. They are the epitome of relationship goals.

There are tons more amazing ships/couples to go with the ones listed here. What’s pretty cool about both DC and Marvel comics is that there are a lot of interesting couples within; sci-fi and fantasy shows have this as well, especially with ships. Who are some of your favorite ships? Who would you have put on this list? Let us know!
