Marvel’s Luke Cage Lauches New Ongoing Comic Series

Today, Marvel has announced that in May of this year, they will be launching a new comic book series centering on solely Luke Cage’s story and the hero’s own adventures.

Comicbook.com sat with writer David Walker about the upcoming comic book series. Walker, along with artist Nelson Blake II, wants to create a Luke Cage that melds classic power-man Luke Cage arcs, but also welcoming new adaptations such as Netflix’s Luke Cage into the new series. According to Walker, this new Luke Cage will be “a little more mature, and I’m not going to say that the television show was a huge influence on me, but it did show me a lot of ideas and ways Luke could be handled… I think the best superheroes are ones who aren’t just beating the crap out of something or someone.”

Walker adds on, saying that in addition to a more mature Luke, but will also carry on a more “private detective” persona who just happens to have supernatural powers. This interesting molding of personalities will result on a well-rounded and relatable Luke Cage.

The upcoming Luke Cage comic will begin by exploring the complex relationship between Luke and Dr. Noah Burstein, with Burstein’s death taking Luke to the city of New Orleans. Dr. Burstein and Luke have had a paternal relationship in the comic adaptation so it would be interesting to see how Dr. Burstein’s death will drive Luke’s new story arc.

With a new city along with a brand-new antagonist, we can expect a lot of new adventures and character growth from Luke Cage in May.
