Aquaman Screenwriter Says Film Will be ‘Really Fun’
By Okon Essien
When you think about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the words that may come to your mind are lighthearted, campy, family friendly, and fun. Then you have the DC Extended Universe, which some would describe as dark, and maybe even noir. Things of that nature. There’s nothing wrong with either of those general tones, but the issue is that the latter hasn’t had much success with their shared film universe so far. It looks like they finally tried to lighten things up with Suicide Squad, but we all saw how that turned out. This year we’re going to be properly introduced to Wonder Woman in her self-titled film, and then we’ll see all the DCEU come together a few months later in Justice League. Based off the trailers alone, it seems that Warner Bros. is still trying to find that lighter tone for their movies, and apparently that notion isn’t going to stop with just those two films.
Will Beall, the screenwriter for 2018’s Aquaman has gone on record (via Collider) and shared some comments on how the tone of Aquaman will be in comparison to the other DCEU films:
“It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be really fun. What we’ve come up with and James [Wan] especially — he has a really clear idea of the tone he’s going to have, and I think Aquaman is one that’s going to blow people’s minds, not just visually, but I think the story and the scope of it is really great.”
“Really fun” isn’t usually a phrase you hear when someone describes Aquaman, but we’ll take his word for it. Jason Momoa appears to be a fun guy, so we’re sure that as well as his towering physique and stoic demeanor, he’ll be able to provide a few campy moments that will receive a few laughs from audiences.
Aquaman makes its way to theaters Oct. 5, 2018.
