More Appearances From Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera Have Been Teased
By Okon Essien
It’s been a little over two weeks since the theatrical release of Rouge One: A Star Wars Story, and of course fans have been clamoring over the story, and the amazing cast as well. One of the standout and most interesting characters in the film was Saw Gerrera (played by Forest Whitaker), a battle-weary rebel soldier who, over the years had also become something of a military zealot.
His character seems to have been received very well, because as well as appearing in Rogue One, hie has been featured in animated form in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and will soon cameo in Star Wars Rebels. Interestingly enough though, we may see more of him in some form or another in the Star Wars universe.
While chatting it up with Empire, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy commented on the prospect of moving forward with Gerrera in future stories:
“With Saw Gerrera, we just became very intrigued with him as a character [from The Clone Wars] and how he fits inside this story….To be honest, we originally thought we were going to develop Saw into something much larger, but we couldn’t accommodate it. So he is not in the movie as much as we would like to have him in the movie, which creates the opportunity to explore his character even further in our future development.”
It’s really cool that they’re trying to give this character a bigger story, because he seemed to have something of a troubled past that deserved exploring. It’d be nice if they showed us what happened in his life that led to him being the way he is. But alas, we can only dream of such things. We’ll just have to hope Lucasfilm gives Forest Whitaker’s character a compelling story in some way or another.
